A splendid news for lovers of alternative tourism, far from the usual crowded destinations and fully immersed in the charm of dream locations between Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria. Starting from 9th June, Trenitalia has activated a tourist line between Taranto and Sibari: a special route, operating on Saturdays and Sundays until 29th September, which will allow holidaymakers from all over Italy to visit not only the two main cities of the route but also, and especially, the wonderful villages of the Metapontino area, from Policoro to Oriolo, from Nova Siri to Roseto Capo Spulico, not forgetting the extraordinary “pearl of the Ionian,” Rocca Imperiale, to be experienced in one breath, perhaps by staying in the charming bed and breakfast a stone’s throw from the famous castle.

Stay in Rocca Imperiale: How to Arrive by Train

The special train, provided by Trenitalia, is called the “Train of Magna Graecia,” aimed at boosting tourism within the so-called Metapontino area. Three regions – Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria – have so much to offer tourists eager to immerse themselves in the historical, natural, and recreational beauties that only the Ionian coast of this special southern triad can offer. Two pairs of trains, departing from Taranto at 09:02 and 16:33 and resuming their itinerary from Sibari at 11:10 and 18:32, offer travellers a unique journey that will touch unforgettable stops such as Nova Siri – a small “jewel” rich in history and fun – and the “little Tropea,” Rocca Imperiale, famous for its castle and more.

A Rich Historical Heritage

These towns are rich in history, featuring a fabulous seafront, pristine beaches, and capable of captivating every type of tourist, even through their culinary delights. Rocca Imperiale is one of the main locations on the Magna Graecia railway itinerary, awarded the “Blue Flag” for its seafront along with the municipalities of Trebisacce and Roseto Capo Spulico. Staying in the villages of the Alto Ionio Cosentino not only could be economically attractive but also offer a unique and rare holiday experience for every type of tourist.

The Importance of Promoting the Metaponto Area

The activation of the “Train of Magna Graecia” starting on 9th June is the first – and hopefully not the last – step for the revival of tourism involving the Metapontino area, too often overlooked in favour of more “fashionable” destinations but probably overexposed.Giving visitors the chance to visit or stay in the villages of Rocca Imperiale, Policoro, and other locations between Calabria and Basilicata is the best solution to breathe new life into the tourism sector of Southern Italy, allowing businesses and individuals involved in catering, hospitality, and other receptive and tourist activities to gain not only economically but also reputationally. Now we just have to wait for the train’s whistle directed to these dream destinations and imagine staying on top of the world, a stone’s throw from the historic Frederician residence.
